This building, also known as the Zemco Building because of the so-named retail textile business that was on the street level, was the site of my studio and living space from 1982 to 1994. It stands on the corner of Griswold and Grand River in downtown Detroit. Painted blue then it was rather easy for visitors to find. The adjacent building on the left is the Farwell Building.

This building, on the corner of Holden and Forsythe streets where the Edsel Ford and John C. Lodge freeways intersect in central Detroit, housed large studios and living spaces for a number of artists. Using studios as residences was unauthorized but the zoning violations went unnoticed or were overlooked. I had a studio on the second floor of the building for most of the 1970s.

This photo was taken by my long-time friend Kathleen Gross, a painter and photographer who occuped a studio on the second floor. She resides now in San Francisco.
